Superlative adjectives

Identify the person or thing at the top or bottom of a group.

Bir guruh ichidagi eng katta, eng arzon yoki eng yaxshi narsani aytish uchun orttirma darajani ishlating. Odatda the + sifatning -est shakli yoki the most + sifat keladi.

A superlative picks out an extreme within a group: the tallest person in the room. Most short adjectives add -est. After final e, add st; some short adjectives double the final consonant. Consonant + y changes to iest. Most longer adjectives use most. Good becomes best; bad becomes worst. Usually put the before the superlative. Use in for a place or group such as in the world or in our class, and of in expressions such as of the three.

Irregular form

Past description

That was the worst day of the week.

Common Mistakes

Avoid: It is the most smallest room.

Use: It is the smallest room.

Do not combine most and est.

Avoid: This is the goodest choice.

Use: This is the best choice.

Good has the irregular superlative best.

Avoid: She is the tallest of our class.

Use: She is the tallest in our class.

Use in with a group such as our class.

Avoid: This is the expensivest watch.

Use: This is the most expensive watch.

Expensive uses most, not est.
