Adverbs of manner and adjectives

Say how someone does something: slowly, carefully or well.

What you will learn

  • Distinguish an adjective from a manner adverb.
  • Form common adverbs and recognise exceptions.
  • Put manner adverbs after a verb or its object.

Ish qanday bajarilishini ravish bilan ayting: slowly — sekin, carefully — ehtiyotkorlik bilan. Sifat odam yoki narsani tasvirlaydi; tarz ravishi esa harakat qanday bajarilishini bildiradi.

Adjectives describe people and things: a careful driver; the driver is careful. Manner adverbs describe actions: she drives carefully. Many adverbs add ly to the adjective. Consonant + y changes to ily: easy → easily. Good becomes well. Fast, hard and late can be both adjectives and adverbs. A manner adverb often goes after the verb, or after the object if there is one: He speaks quietly. He opens the door quietly.

Adjective after a linking verb

Common Mistakes

Avoid: She sings good.

Use: She sings well.

Describe the action sings with well.

Avoid: He runs fastly.

Use: He runs fast.

Fast is already an adverb; do not add ly.

Avoid: She is a carefully driver.

Use: She is a careful driver.

Before the noun driver, use the adjective careful.

Avoid: He opened quietly the door.

Use: He opened the door quietly.

Normally keep the verb and its object together.
