Making arrangements
Suggest a time, offer an alternative and confirm a plan.
Lesson 6 · About 18 minutes
Learn: your objectives
- Negotiate a suitable time politely.
- Confirm the time and meeting place.
Warm-up
Think about these questions. Say a short answer aloud.
- When are you free this week?
- What details do you need before meeting someone?
Useful language
Agreeing on details
Are you free on …?
Check availability before fixing a plan.
Are you free on Thursday afternoon?
I can't then. How about …?
Decline a time and offer another.
I can't then. How about Friday at four?
So, that's …
Repeat the agreed details.
So, that's Friday at four outside the library.
Notice: model speaking
Read aloud. Notice how the speakers use the phrases and respond to each other.
Ali: Are you free on Thursday afternoon?
Nina: I can't then. How about Friday at four?
Ali: Four works for me. Shall we meet outside the library?
Nina: Yes, by the main door?
Ali: Exactly. So, Friday at four, by the library's main door.
Nina: Great. See you there.
Speaking strategy
If a suggested time does not work, offer an alternative. Finish by repeating the exact day, time and place so both people share the same plan.
Pronunciation & fluency focus
Keep times clear: ‘FOUR fifteen’ and ‘FOUR fifty’ are different. Say the whole time again if needed rather than speaking faster.
Teaching guidance, not an analysis of your voice.
Use: controlled practice
Choose a useful response for each situation. Check when all questions are answered. These are phrase exercises, not a speaking assessment.
Build your answer
Write a few keywords. Then look away and speak. Notes stay on this page only.
Speak: your challenge
Perform both sides of a one-minute arrangement. The first time is not suitable. Agree on another time and confirm a clear meeting place.
Keep the change realistic: a work shift or another appointment is enough.
Speak aloud. This page does not record, listen to or assess your speech. There is no automatic speaking score.
Self-check
Open to everyone. Answers, notes and checklists are not saved to an account. These original lessons use level labels to organize learning; completion is not official CEFR certification or proof of a level.
