Past simple: regular and irregular verbs

Tell a simple story about completed actions in the past.

What you will learn

  • Use the same past form for every subject.
  • Spell regular -ed forms correctly.
  • Recognise common irregular past forms and tell a short story.

O‘tmishda tugagan ishlar uchun past simple ishlatiladi. To‘g‘ri fe’llarga odatda -ed qo‘shiladi. Noto‘g‘ri fe’llarning o‘tgan shaklini alohida o‘rganamiz: go → went.

The past simple describes a finished action or sequence in the past. Regular verbs usually add -ed. Irregular verbs have their own past forms. Except for be, the affirmative past form is the same with every subject: I went, she went, they went. Do not add another -s for he or she.

Regular spelling change

Sequence

We went to the market and bought apples.

Irregular form

He took a photo of the river.

U daryoni suratga oldi.

Two past actions

They had lunch, then walked home.

Ular tushlik qildi, keyin uyga piyoda bordi.

Common Mistakes

Avoid: She goed home.

Use: She went home.

Go is irregular: its past form is went.

Avoid: He studyed yesterday.

Use: He studied yesterday.

Consonant + y changes to ied.

Avoid: They stoped here.

Use: They stopped here.

Double p in stop before adding ed.

Avoid: She wents to the shop.

Use: She went to the shop.

Past went stays the same with she; do not add s.
